And twatcrumpet might be my new favorite word.

I *love* email. Email is the best. Kind of like CDs were the best. You can't improve on them!

“(I need to stop retreating into deflective humour when I’m trying to be serious, but it’s hard, it really is),”

Solidarity. I struggle with it, too, as evidenced by 23 years of nonfiction and 6 years of podcasting.

This reminds me so much of the headspace I was in when I wrote my post on transactional networking. I was seeing so much of this "tennis" you speak of and it was making me VERY uncomfortable.

The era of Twitter is over for me. And I won't be settling in on any alternative app either because the problems will migrate over there, the problem is people.

Hear, hear. It is so challenging to navigate these social spaces sometimes. There really needs to be a handbook...

Absolutely agree with this. We all have to deal with those psychic vampires, users and manipulators, and I imagine that they're worse to deal with as a woman. They're very good at making us feel we're being assholes when we enforce our boundaries, no matter how clear we are when setting them.

Setting boundaries and protecting yourself isn't unreasonable, unfriendly, bitchy or anything else that gaslighting predators might want us to believe. I'd rather we didn't have to do that, but there are so many bad actors out there that it's an absolute necessity if you're going to keep a shred of self for yourself. We've all seen what happens to people who don't maintain some insulation between their public persona and private self - the private self gets devoured.

You've a good heart, and that's worth protecting. Do what you must to keep it safe.

Thank you. A really interesting and sobering read. I've been off social media for a while, not because of anything anyone did, just for my own sanity, and am tentatively dipping my toes in the water again mainly to follow and support an old friend from school who's taken up writing. I'm not trying to promote or sell anything or build a large follower base but I'll definitely make sure I heed some of this advice.
